Choosing home care in Ottawa: where to start
Eastside Healthcare
Arranging home care for the first time usually starts with a vague sense that something needs to change, rather than a clear idea of what to ask for. That’s normal. Here’s a practical way to work through it.
Start with what the day actually looks like
Rather than starting from a list of service categories, walk through a typical day and note where things break down: the shower that’s become risky, the meals that are getting skipped, the errands that have quietly stopped happening. The answer to “what kind of care is needed” usually falls out of that exercise far more reliably than picking from a menu of options.
Understand the funding picture
Some home care hours in Ontario are publicly funded through Ontario Health atHome. Where those hours exist, private care can run alongside them — filling gaps in coverage, extending beyond the hours available, or covering support that falls outside what’s publicly funded. If you’re not sure what you’re eligible for, it’s worth asking on your first call to a private provider as well as contacting Ontario Health atHome directly; the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Questions worth asking any provider
- How is caregiver continuity handled — will it be the same person, or a rotating roster?
- What happens when the regular caregiver is sick or unavailable?
- Who writes the care plan, and how often is it reviewed as needs change?
- What’s the minimum visit length, and how is billing structured?
The answers tell you a lot about how the day-to-day will actually feel, which matters more than any brochure.
